Large monitoring systems

The Agency of Spanish data protection is the supervisory authority at national level of the following major information systems that, at European level, permit the exchange of personal information with different purposes.

There are currently four running systems which are described below.

Schengen

Schengen information system (SIS)

The information system of Schengen (SIS (II) is an information system on a large scale that facilitates cooperation between national authorities border control, customs and police in the so-calledArea Schengen. The SIS II works in 30 European countries, i.e. 26 Member states of the HAT (Helpful only Chipre are not yet connected to the SIS), as well as in Islandia, Liechtenstein, Norwegian and Swiss.

The SIS II allows the competent authorities of the states Schengen introduce and consult alerts on persons and objects. The reason to issue an alert include reject the entry to a person who is not entitled to enter or remain in the territory Schengen, search and arrest of a person who has been issued a European arrest warrant, search for a missing person, or property stolen or lost as a car or a passport.

The rules governing this system recognizes the right of citizens affected the exercise of rights of access, rectification and cancellation, as well as certain limitations to them.

Visa information system of short duration (VIS)

As a complement the information system SIS is the visa information system (VIS) that allows the competent authorities to implement the common policy of visas on short-term visas (up to 90 days).

The rules governing the system VIS recognizes the right of citizens affected the exercise of rights of access, rectification and deletion, as well as certain limitations to them.
